The SAFE-SORRY team is again well-represented at the yearly BAPS conference, this year taking place at our own university – ULB in Brussels!
On Monday 26 May, Stijn Van Petegem will chair an invited symposium entitled “Raising children in a changing social world: How sociocultural context shapes parenting”. As a first contribution, Elliana Lamprianidou will present the results of her cross-cultural study examining the ways in which gender inequalities and gender role beliefs shape parenting, for which she makes use of SAFE-SORRY data collected across 11 countries. Stijn will then present to results of the cross-temporal meta-analysis examining whether overprotective parenting has increased across time, and whether sociocultural factors such as social capital, economic inequality and gender role beliefs help to explain differences across time and countries. Finally, Nele Flamant (Ghent University) will present the results of two longitudinal studies (including the SAFE-SORRY longitudinal study) in order to examine how individual factors (such as parental personality and child behavior) interact with contextual factors (such as life transitions and parents’ threat beliefs) for understanding overprotective parenting.
On Tuesday 27 May, Cindy Eira Nunes will chair a symposium entitled “Contemporary challenges of parents: Studying various family forms at different key moments”. Cindy will first present a longitudinal study on changes in coparenting as adolescents transition out of highschool, and how these changes may be colored by socioeconomic pressures. Louise Mathijs will be presenting the qualitative results of her interview study conducted on parents who participated in the ACT parenting groups, examining their perspectives on the change processes that played during this program. Finally, our close colleague Alessio Gubello (ULB) will present some preliminary results of a meta-synthesis that he is currently conducting on socialization practices in gay and lesbian parent planned families. The symposium will be closed with a discussion by Nele Flamant (Ghent University).
Finally, our research interns will also actively participate in the conference! On Tuesday, Clara Raucy and Oriane Meeus de Kemmeter will present the preliminary results of the qualitative study on teacher perspectives on parental involvement (conducted in collaboration with Annalisa Soncini), while Léa Noirfalise and Sinem Yüksel will present the design of our observational study on overprotective parenting (conducted in collaboration with Cindy Eira Nunes).
We hope to see you there!
