In both the scientific and popular literature, the terms helicopter parenting and overprotective parenting are often used interchangeably. However, in a recent collaborative study with our Australian colleagues, we show that measures of helicopter parenting and overprotective parenting may capture different features of parenting, which also relate differently to other aspects of parenthood (such as parental mental health, and parents’ experiences and perceptions of social-contextual conditions).
