A new SAFE-SORRY scientific article has been published! Led by Sule Selçuk, in collaboration with Cindy Eira Nunes, Elliana Lamprianidou, Bénédicte Mouton, and Stijn Van Petegem, this study explored the role of societal pressure in certain parenting practices during adolescence.
The findings obtained from Belgian parents of adolescents show that parents who feel greater societal pressure regarding their parenting role also report higher levels of overprotective parenting. This association was observed among both mothers and fathers. Among fathers, perceived societal pressure was also associated with higher levels of controlling parenting.
These findings highlight the importance of considering societal expectations surrounding parenting when seeking to better understand certain parenting practices.
